Constant fatigue and lethargy lack of energy are not necessarily symptoms of disease

Chronic fatigue is a common problem. The condition is destructive and does not subside after rest, in addition, it is accompanied by various symptoms, including headaches, impaired memory or decreased concentration, muscle and joint pain, sore throat or sleep that does not bring rest. The causes of constant fatigue and drowsiness can be many, and while the condition may have a pathological basis, it doesn’t have to at all. What can cause a constant feeling of fatigue and lack of energy? When is it worth consulting a specialist? We answer!

What are signs of constant fatigue and excessive sleepiness during the day?

Excessive sleepiness and fatigue, a drop in mood, problems with concentration, lowered mood or headaches and dizziness are non-specific symptoms that can have a variety of causes. Overwork and failure to observe sleep hygiene may lead to their occurrence in the first place. Problems at home and at work, as well as constant working beyond one’s strength, usually cause fatigue and are responsible for a constant lack of energy.

The cause of fatigue and lethargy can also be sleep apnea or vitamin and mineral deficiencies. For some, these symptoms are an unwanted effect of medication [1].

Keep in mind, however, that chronic fatigue and lethargy can also be caused by various conditions and disorders. The condition can have endocrine, neurological, psychiatric or infectious causes, among others. Drowsiness and fatigue can be a symptom of diseases such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, kidney failure, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and many others. If symptoms are ignored and treatment is neglected, chronic fatigue syndrome can result, which significantly affects daily functioning and reduces the comfort of life [1,2].

What to do when fatigue, lethargy, weakness and lack of energy appear?

Fatigue affects each of us and is somewhat inherent in human life. However, if symptoms of constant fatigue such as constant irritability, decreased energy, difficulty concentrating, insomnia or anemia bother us for an extended period of time and impede normal functioning, it is worth consulting a doctor. In particular, symptoms such as [1] should be considered alarming:

  • headache,
  • pain in many joints,
  • muscle pain,
  • malaise after exertion,
  • short-term memory impairment,
  • sore throat,
  • tender lymph nodes,
  • restless sleep.

If continuous fatigue nags for at least six months, in addition to the presence of at least 4 of the symptoms indicated above, chronic fatigue syndrome is diagnosed [1].

Observing the symptoms mentioned above in yourself should prompt you to go to your primary care physician and perform basic examinations. Correctly identifying the cause of such a condition is key to getting the right treatment.

How to combat chronic fatigue and constant sleepiness?

Persistent symptoms of fatigue and lethargy over a long period of time, as mentioned, should prompt medical consultation and diagnosis. If the condition has a pathological basis, it is necessary to treat the underlying disease.

Keep in mind, however, that constant fatigue and lethargy can also be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and poor sleep quality, so it’s a good idea to work on your eating habits and take care of restorative sleep at first. Since chronic fatigue can be caused by nutrient deficiencies, it is worth supplementing your diet with vitamins for fatigue and lack of energy. You need to take special care with the supply of vitamin B12, B6 and C, as well as magnesium and iron, as these are the components that may be responsible for fatigue and tiredness [3].

In states of increased need for vitamins and minerals, especially in women, special Falvit vitamins for women can be used. This is a set of 13 vitamins and 9 minerals that provides the body with the ingredients it needs. Falvit vitamins can be purchased at the pharmacy without a prescription [3].

People with sedentary lifestyles are further recommended to introduce regular physical activity. To begin with, daily walks will suffice, during which you will be able to oxygenate your body on occasion.
