Many people are wondering what direction to take in life. The questions “what do I want to do?” and “how do I want to achieve it?” run through people’s minds on a daily basis. However, there is nothing surprising in this, after all, we have to decide what we want to do in life at such a young age… And this is a good time to get advice from a career counselor. Such a person can help us realize what career path we want to choose, what we like to do and how we should pursue our goals. A career counselor as well as a financial advisor can help us in many matters, but it should be remembered that such cooperation requires mutual trust.
Who is a career counselor?
This is a person, specially trained (usually after specific studies or courses), whose task is to help people who are lost in their expectations find the right career path. A vocational counselor interviews us, asks us about our preferences and often takes special tests, whose task is to determine, corresponding to us, a professional profile. If we go to a career counselor with a direction already chosen, we can, on the other hand, expect advice on writing a resume, cover letter and presenting ourselves at a possible job interview.
Career counselor – when is the best time to go to him?
Of course, we can visit a counselor at any age. However, it makes the most sense when we have a clean slate, that is, even before choosing a high school. We then go to the specialist and tell him about our interests, take a test and he will make us aware of what school we should choose. It may then turn out that a hairdressing vocational school or a mechanical technical school will be a better option than the general high school that our parents are pushing us for. It is worth remembering that not everyone, contrary to general opinion, needs to graduate with a master’s degree. Those with a flair for specific professions will fit into specially profiled schools. However, remember that it is also worth visiting a career counselor in high school, college and even afterwards. After all, the career path can always be changed, and such a person will certainly suggest how we can do it. We will find out about available further training courses, etc.
Career counselor – where to meet him?
Very often they are educators and psychologists who work in schools and are very familiar with the labor market. They follow the latest trends and assess the needs of employers in order to be able to send their charges into a vocational area where work is available. Of course, they do this according to what comes out of the interview and vocational tests. A career counselor is a person whose services can be used:
- at universities,
- in elementary schools,
- in high schools,
- in labor offices,
- psychological and pedagogical counseling centers,
- on the Internet.
What comes out of the meeting?
Just visiting a career counselor will not give us a secure job. However, it can greatly help in preparing to get one. Discussing the choice of school together, advice on resumes, advice on how to behave during interviews, and pointing out which companies are worth applying to in general – these are just some of the things a career counselor can do for us. It is worth remembering, however, that although such a person can guide us and help us understand what our preferences are, the final result depends only on us. We can go to a counselor, get a ready-made answer about what we should do in life, and still decide that we’d rather try something else.
A career counselor is a person who can significantly influence our future. It is worth a visit to see if there are other employment prospects for us. It is not obligatory, but it is worth examining all options. Similarly, in the case of choosing a school. We will choose one that we are the one that we consider suitable. However, nothing will be lost by visiting a specialist. How about if he suggests new, and although different, not necessarily worse, options? It is good to give ourselves a chance. A career counselor, on the other hand, will be perfect (and for everyone) before looking for a job. Such a visit will be useful, if only to help us prepare for the recruitment process.
